It’s no big surprise that the USA are worried about energy supply. they are well-known to have among the highest energy use per capita on the planet. So they’re looking for the solution in a typically American fashion; dramatic, high-tech, and not in their country.
In fact, not even on this planet. This interactive infographic on space based solar power was published on the US Department of Energy website during space week.
To be fair, I do think this is a fantastic idea. You side-step around the weather and atmosphere dispersing the solar energy (and keeping us alive at the same time) and avoid the NIMBY paradox (Not In My Back Yard).
Of course the counter to that is that you have Americans owning a humongous potential energy source, outside of their national borders with frickin’ lasers strapped to them. The last time the US wanted lasers in space was for a different reason…
As the earths population grows, and space expansion inevitably becomes a more attractive prospect, I can’t help but wonder when we will start hearing the term NIMPO… (Not In My Planetary Orbit).
